Stinger Season – October to May
There are two types of ‘stingers’ in the area: the Irukandji Jellyfish and the Box Jellyfish. They might be present year-round, but there is a higher risk between October and May where jellyfish can be found around the mainland, islands and occasionally the reef.
By taking some simple precautions to minimise risk you can safely and comfortably swim around Fitzroy Island. When snorkelling or swimming, please wear protective ‘stinger suits’. These suits are available to hire for a small cost at the Fitzroy Island Sports Hub. We have stinger/vinegar stations placed around the resort area. If you are stung, please pour vinegar liberally over the affected area and seek first-aid assistance urgently.
